Digital Downloads – Top Ten!!

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

It is amazing to see the revolution of indie music making it to the top! Feist is 1, 2, 3,
4 on the top ten digital download list and she has 2 songs featured in television advertisements, one being the new iPod Nano, both currently in rotation. Her video in the iPod Nano commercial couldn’t be hurting MP3 sales!! The indies really took over that industry this year.

I pray Feist continues to climb the charts and knocks Kanye out of the number 3 spot!!!

Kelly Clarkson has sure made it clear that she did this album her way, but who’s sorry now? After reports of her feuding over the direction of her new album, “My December”, Kelly Clarkson is now apologizing to Clive Davis, whom she calls, “one of the great record men of all time”. In a statement made by the 25- year-old, “American Idol” winner, turned rocker says, “I want to set the record straight on this by saying that I want my band, my advisors, those close to me and my record label to be one big, tightly knit family. Like any family we will disagree and argue sometimes but, in the end, it’s respect and admiration that will keep us together.”

Although Kelly is still waiting on a “hit” song to shake out from this album, she did a swell job. I’m not a huge fan myself, but I am a fan of Feist and Kelly does a pretty nice impression on the lovely song “Irvine”. Unlike Kelly’s other songs from previous albums, this one is smally sung and works it’s self out just fine. Many indie artists are making a go of their own production, sales and tours, so why can’t Kelly? I’ll tell you why, because she’s already worked with “one of the great record men of all time”!

Cat Power Wins 2007 Shortlist Music Prize

Chan Marshall 2

Cat Power (whose real name is Chan Marshall), has become the first woman to be awarded the Shortlist Music Prize. The singer/songwriter won with her newest release and best work (in my opinion) “The Greatest”. The album beat out veteran Tom Waits and eight other finalist’s releases such as Band of Horses, Beirut, Bonnie Prince Billy, Cat Power, Girl Talk, Hot Chip, Joanna Newsom, Regina Spektor, and Spank Rock.

The album, “The Greatest” opened last year at No. 34 on The Billboard 200, which was recorded in Memphis with veteran session musicians Teenie and Leroy Hodges, and Steve Potts. The album was released in January 2006 on Matador Records, the label she’s been with since 1996.

The Shortlist Prize honors acts that have made sterling albums released in the US, but have not yet hit the mainstream. The prize is determined by votes amongst peers. This years judges were Gary Lightbody (from Snow Patrol), Ronnie Vannucci (The Killers), Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips), KT Tunstall, Franz Ferdinand, and Panic! At The Disco.

In Los Angeles, where the awards are held, Sigur Ros was the first to be awarded the prize in 2001. Other winners include N*E*R*D, Damien Rice and TV On The Radio.

Chan pronounced (shawn), says the album marks a new chapter of sobriety in her life. Noticed by her much stronger stage performance, which was sometimes impaired by her abuse of drugs and alcohol.
